It’s that time of year, when snow falls, fingers freeze, and hot chocolate spills all over your beautiful Kenneth Cole jacket. To me, winter is a very soulful season; everybody is welcoming and cheery, College Walk is lined with brightly-lit trees, and the Columbia University Gospel Choir, is well, the epitome of soul.
All of these things keep you warm on the inside, correct? But what keeps you warm on the outside better than sweaters, skirts, and knit tights. Oh wait…Just gave you the answer. This combination is a triple threat: acceptable attire for holiday parties, warm for the weather, and totally appropriate for mistletoe moments.
And that’s not all; this look is completely and utterly versatile. What do I mean by that you ask? Well, you’ll find that this look can be fancy, preppy, grungy, hipster, simple, casual, you name it…you get it. Long sweaters, crop sweaters, cardigans, bandage skirts, circle skirts, high waisted pencil skirts, etc. etc. etc.
Personally, I love this style because it shows that you are trying to look decent, but it doesn’t require you to fuss over (and spend an hour figuring out) what to wear. Does that make sense? I hope so. If you look above, I’m wearing a $4 Ralph Lauren sweater I found at a Bronx thrift store (called Unique) that features a fun Chinese-esque dragon, a simple black mini skirt from Urban Outfitters, and maroon knit tights form H&M. Though this outfit is completely comfort-based, it’s fun, a little sexy (the tighter skirt), and festive (the dragon!) Furthermore, something such as the dragon design spices up a casual outfit, and I would say, that if you’re trying to have a mistletoe moment, it’s good to look “spiced up”. Agreed?
I feel that I am unqualified to assert my authority in specific style tips for this look, because everyBODY is different. If you do decided, however, to go ahead and take my advice, I would suggest that you find a sweater/skirt combo that really emphasizes your figure. Nothing too baggy that screams “self-conscious” and nothing too tight that says “I want more than just a kiss under the mistletoe”. Keep it classy, sophisticated, and add some hints of color here and there.
Ladies (or soul sisters if you will…), this winter it’s our turn to one-up men’s style and show them who’s boss when it comes to holiday attire. I mean let’s be honest, a little S&S (skirt and sweater) action never hurt anybody. Just watch out for studded garments…that might hurt.
